The Rewilding

The work in this exhibition is the result of living in and moving through subtropical rainforests over the last 30 years. I see myself as a hybrid mix of dedicated artist and amateur ecologist finding inspiration in the connections to biodiversity while exploring the realities of present worldwide extinction events.

Like many of us, I'd like to see a halt to the extinction of species, and a planet wide increase of biodiversity.  To that end, all of my artwork is consciously embedded with that intent – like shamanic Power Objects….which is somewhat akin to the efforts of cave artists, some of whose intentions were likely to have been to increase the availability of species.

Although my works are largely abstract – reflecting the art education I had and my background as a painter, there are references to fragile symbolic species – primarily parrots – illustrated in the gestural use of colours of each piece.

The glassblowing process I employ is labour intensive and aesthetically risky, involving a team of five, collaborating bit by bit to construct each piece hot, from start to finish. The forms of the works exhibited range from the minimalist to the biomorphic, demonstrating a constant move towards both an artistic and personal philosophical Rewilding.
